Building a Positive Self Image

Self-esteem is one of the most important ingredients for a happy and successful life. It can be defined as the value we place on ourselves as human beings. Unfortunately, many people have low self-esteem and this is particularly true during teen years. Self-esteem is an essential, powerful tool to enable you to find your way through challenging times. Self-esteem can be built by having a positive self-image, learning to be assertive, and by recognizing your accomplishments.

Activity #1 - Listen to Your Self Talk

What is a self talk?

Do you carry on a steady conversation in your mind? 
Do you ever hear what you are saying to yourself?
Do you put yourself down or call yourself names?
This is self talk. 75 to 80 percent of what we program into ourselves is negative thoughts or feelings.


Activity #2 - Positive Self Talk

How do you change negative talk into positive self talk?

All it takes is 3 weeks to start viewing  yourself more positively. All you need to do is think and speak positively.

Replacing negative talk with positive talk and practicing it for 3 weeks. Create up to four positive feeling statements for yourself.

Following are some examples of positive feeling statements. Your statements should be written in the present tense:

  • I am intelligent, humourous and fun loving.
  • I am focused and directed.
  • I am creative, patient and kind.
  • I am calm, relaxed and having fun.

Memorize your positive statements and repeat them for yourself until you are able to start thinking about yourself more positively.

Write out your positive statements. Put these statements in a place where you will be able to see them most of the time like on your wall, fridge, homescreen on your phone, computer or tablet. Repeat the statements to yourself until you start to think about yourself more positively.


Activity #3 - Recognize Your Accomplishments

This activity illustrates how to increase your confidence by recognizing your accomplishments.

List all the accomplishments that you have achieved in your life. Maybe you did you something on your own for the first time, or you accomplished a goal you set for yourself or won an award.

Please don’t ignore the small stuff; list them all. All your accomplishments make a difference whether large or small. Recognize your accomplishments and be proud of them.

By recognizing your accomplishments you will discover your self worth which improves your self confidence.


Developing a Good Self Image

You have a body
You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire time you’re here in this world.

You will learn lessons
You are enrolled in a full-time school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think they are not useful or even stupid.

There are no mistakes, only lessons
Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work”.

A lesson is repeated until learned
A lesson will come to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it you can go on to the next lesson.

Learning lessons does not end
Life is full of lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

Others are merely mirrors of you
You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it relates to you.

What you make of your life is up to you
You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

Your answers lie inside you
All you need to do is look, listen and trust.

How to Keep Self-Esteem Intact

Following are some ways you can maintain your self esteem:

Use Humour
The best way to learn humour is through imitation. Making light of a situation takes practice and teaches you not to take things to heart. It can only be done if you stop taking yourself so seriously.

Express Yourself
Controlling your difficult feelings and expressing them creatively is positive and can be beneficial to you. You can express your feelings through poetry, journal writing, doing art work such as painting and collage, playing a musical instrument and dancing. These are great ways to express your emotions and receive feedback from others.

Make Connections
It is important to stay connected with others of your age. Getting involved in  social activities such as clubs, groups and on facebook  can help you  build strong relationships, while helping you to keep self–esteem intact.
